Goodreads blurb:

Becky Brandon’s life is blooming. She’s working at London’s newest big store, The Look, house-hunting with husband Luke (her secret wish is a Shoe Room)… and she’s pregnant. She couldn’t be more overjoyed-especially after discovering that shopping cures morning sickness. Everything has to be perfect for her baby: from the designer nursery and the latest stroller to top-of-the-line medical care.

But when the must-have celebrity obstetrician Becky’s been so desperate to see turns out to be Luke’s glamorous, intellectual ex-girlfriend, Becky’s perfect world starts to crumble. She’s shopping for two… but are there three in her marriage?

My Book Review:

Another Sophie Kinsella book finished. And to be honest I am amazed how the good old Rebecca (Becky) Brandon nee Bloomwood has mesmerized me again. I have been ardently following the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella from my teenage (this statement made me sound like an oldie reminiscing, arghh) and the last few years had been a break but I am back to the shopping sprees of Becky. This time she is not alone, she has her mini baby bump and usual Becky Bloomwood troubles chasing her.

Shopaholic and Baby is the fifth book in the Confessions of a Shopaholic series. This is a book that is based on the same old chaotic life of Becky Bloomwood from where we left her in the previous installment Shopaholic and Sister. The previous book had set the background for this one and I was excited to read more about the pregnant life of Mrs. Brandon.

As we all know, Becky has a problem with shopping. She just goes on and on purchasing things she doesn’t even need or in her words she has an eye for good things. She has been just off her honeymoon when she discovered about her half-sister, and when she finally bonded with her frugal sister Jess, she came to know that she is pregnant. This book continues to explore her pregnancy, her mood swings, and her obvious ways of coping with stress — . But how can anything around Becky Bloomwood be just a simple straightforward thing? Along with her pregnancy, she has some trouble with her husband, Luke Brandon and his ex-girlfriend, who is by the sweet fortune of fates, is the celebrity obstetrician who is handling Becky’s pregnancy. Sounds complicated? Don’t worry, you will find a bunch of more complicated issues within, but eventually, it will all come around. Just sit tight and grab some caramel popcorn.

Writing Style of Sophie Kinsella:

About the writing style, I don’t know what else to say other than that it is brilliant. It is the very reason we all go back to Becky Bloomwood despite her irritating urge to buy everything that glitters and glam. The author devises the characters such that their every quirk becomes entertainment for the readers. Sophie Kinsella is one of those authors whom I can read anytime, without failing to be entertained. If I had to recommend a book for anything from mood swings to a boring mess, I will recommend Sophie Kinsella. I just cannot force my opinions enough about the amazing world she creates through Becky Bloomwood’s character.

Becky is no more just a character; she is a friend who has a knack for getting into the most unsuitable and stupid situations and having an utterly unbelievable luck score to ace them all. The same was true for this book too. The characters are also well-constructed and they mostly stick to their traits and roles as assigned to them at the beginning of the series. This might also be called out as a lack of character development. The only character that has evolved is Jess that too very little bit.

The humor in the story is on point, and I enjoy every bite at life in Becky’s world. Her quirks and impulsive buying and decision-making only add up to the fun. I never get too keyed up by her actions now that I know that she is going to turn the tide around anyway. It might seem like a mood kill for people as I am aware of the ending, but let me tell you that is exactly why I read these books. They are happy ending fairy-tale kind of books, just based in the real world. There are shocks and revelations but at the end, the author always makes sure to keep my precious heart unhurt and safe with a bunch of tears of happiness or giggles. I know that everything is going to be good in the end, but that doesn’t make me uncurious about the whole procedure which seems extremely unlikely from my situation. This is the charm of these books.

Conclusion and Recommendations:

Overall, I love reading the shopaholic series. This book is a nice addition to the series and Sophie Kinsella would continue to entertain people like me all over the world through her characteristic writing style. I will highly recommend this book to you if you want to read something light and fluffy in between some serious reads. It will also be easier to read and you might finish this in a few hours (like me) or could sacrifice a day or two for this. If you are into chick-lit, then this is something you should pick up without giving a second thought to your never-ending tbr ( it is called never-ending cause it is not going to end, okay? Get accustomed to it) and your budget (because it is never enough!). I hope you find some laughs in this story.
